Our PetCo is in a very populated, heavily middle-class, suburb of St. plus, you get to talk to the breeder face to face, which gives you an opportunity to learn about the genetic history of your animal, its feeding/maintenance schedule, etc - all great info to give you a head start in caring for your new snake, that you likely won’t get from a chain store. those things are SO much fun for any reptile enthusiast, and you should be able to easily find a normal morph ball or corn for the same price or less than what chain stores charge. it’s up to you on whether or not you’re comfortable supporting that kind of practice.Īs others have stated, though, reptile expos are a great alternative. it’s possible to get a healthy snake from a chain store, but if that store is anything like the locations i worked at: for every healthy animal on the sales floor, there’s another from the same shipment in the wellness area in the back being treated for illness, and yet another in the dead freezer who didn’t make it through shipping. that means they’re bred with no regards to genetic strength, and that they’re kept in abysmal conditions with minimal handling up until the point they arrive in the store. the animals sold at chain pet stores come from what is essentially the puppy mill of the reptile world - they’re bred for quantity, not quality of life. As someone who used to work at a petco, i’d advise against it.
